Former Powell and CR International exec, Billy Benton dies at 71

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Billy D. Benton, a successful veteran in the furniture industry, passed away on March 13 at his home in Greensboro, N.C. He was 71 years old.

Born in Phoenix, Benton began his career as a warehouse team member at Levitz Furniture there. He climbed the ranks and spent more than 30 years in senior management posts at Levitz Furniture and Roberds.

Benton then formed an importing firm, Avalon Professional Worldwide, serving as president. He continued his career as the president and CEO of Powell Company and went on to become the president of CR International, a sourcing division of Chromcraft Revington Inc.

A founding partner of Folio-21 Furniture, which was eventually sold to HT Hackney, Benton also headed up South Seas Rattan Furniture later in his career.

Benton is survived by three daughters, two granddaughters and his ex-wife, Connie Post, with whom he remained very close.

Plans for services are pending, and details will be found at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home.
