Upholstery manufacturer veteran Gerald Washington dies at 85

PONTOTOC, Miss. — Longtime furniture manufacturer Gerald Washington passed away at his home on Aug. 25. He was 85.

Born Jan. 5, 1939, Washington started his career by manufacturing upholstery furniture in the 1970s, according to the Daily Journal. He ran the company until 1997, when he sold the business and started American Furniture Manufacturing. He eventually sold that business to private equity firms and in 2009 opened Washington Furniture Sales in Pontotoc, the Journal reported.

Washington is survived by his wife, Ruby; three children; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dalton and Idell Washington, and a brother.
