CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Retired Macy’s National Case Goods Buyer Sandor (Sandy) Mirell passed away on Nov. 21 after a short illness in Charlotte, N.C. He was 86 years old.

Mirell was born May 27, 1938, in Paterson, N.J., to Sol and Lillian Mirell. After graduating from Farleigh Dickenson University, Mirell went to work for Bambergers Department store as upholstery buyer. Later he worked for Carson Pirie Scott (Chicago), W&J Sloane (San Francisco), Hudsons (Detroit), May Co. (Los Angeles) and Riches (Atlanta) before moving back to New York as national case goods buyer for Macy’s. He retired from the company in 2009.

“Sandy Mirell was one of the brightest and creative merchants I ever worked with in my career,” said Kevin O’Cononor, former president and CEO of Samson Marketing. “Moreover, he was one of the finest gentlemen I ever dealt with. He could be demanding but always in a professional manner. He was a ‘true partner’ in working with you as a vendor, always trying to create a win-win for both you as the vendor and he as the retail merchant. It was his hallmark as an incredibly successful merchant. I will truly miss my friend!”

Peter Cassidy, former Macy’s Home executive, added, “Sandy was one of the first merchants to embrace the import container opportunity with unique aggressive product promotions in bedroom and dining room, dramatically accelerating the Macy’s case goods business in our 400 stores.”

Preceded in death by his wife, Rachelle, Mirell is survived by his niece and sister-in-law. His ashes will be interned in Skokie, Ill., at the resting place of his wife.
