LUBBOCK, Texas – Furniture retailer Walter Harrell Spears passed away Sept. 12, at the age of 91.

Spears was born Sept. 10, 1929, in Ardmore, Okla., to Harbison and Evelyn Spears. He graduated from Baylor University in 1950. In 1951, he married Martha Isbell in San Antonio, Texas.

Spears and his uncle, James Spears, founded Spears Furniture in Lubbock, Texas, in 1950. They first shopped the Chicago furniture market and then the North Carolina markets. Through the years, Spears attended more than 125 furniture markets in pursuit of the right merchandise.

Spears purchased Stowers Furniture of San Antonio in 1977 and operated that company with his son, Jonathan Spears. He served as a director of the National Home Furnishings Assn. and was Southwest Retailer of the Year in 1986.
