DRIPPING SPRINGS, Texas — Bedding industry veteran Martin H. “Marty” Galex died Aug. 20 at the age of 84.
Born in Chicago on Nov. 14, 1936 to Wilbur and Rose Galex, he attended Rock Island High School and in his teens began working in the family-owned mattress factory, founded by his grandfather, Jacob Sherman. Eventually, Galex became vice president and then president of the company that is now The Bedding Group/Therapedic Midwest.
After high school, Galex went to the University of Iowa, where he graduated from the College of Commerce in 1957. After graduation, he married Robert Fay (Bobbie) Levinson on June 30, 1957.
In addition to his work at The Bedding Group, Galex was elected to the City Council in 1973 and 1977, and he served as interim mayor for seven months in 1978. He also served as a board member of the Tri-City Jewish Center.
After he retired, Galex and his wife moved to Boca Raton, Fla., and then to Texas a few years ago.
Galex is predeceased by his parents and infant son. He is survived by his wife Bobbie, four children and 11 grandchildren.
Burial will be at the Hebrew Cemetery in Rock Island, Ill. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assn.
