michael greene - typewriterSOMERS, N.Y. — Michael Greene, one of the early columnists writing for Furniture Today, passed away last week. He was 98.

Earning his bachelor degree at Hofstra University at the age of 48, Greene called himself a “hunt-and-peck” newspaper columnist, and he began writing Furniture Today columns about furniture retailing in 1976. He later began writing columns for sister publication Home Textiles Today, always an advocate for the “mom and pop” stores. Always, he added his keen insight along with his quirky sense of humor to drive his point home.

During his career, Greene was admitted to the Writers Hall of Fame, Furniture Industry, in 1989 and was elected an honorary member of the International Home Furnishings Representatives Assn. He worked as a retail consultant to manufacturers of children’s furniture and planned more than 40,000 children’s rooms with their parents.
