CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Richard “Dick” Fowler Jr., who led the family-owned Fowler Brothers Furniture as president for more than 35 years, died Dec. 24. He was 79.
A native of Chattanooga, Fowler attended the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., where he met his wife, Sarah. He returned home in 1963 to work in the family furniture business, which dates back to 1885 with showrooms in Chattanooga since 1910. For the next 40 years, he was an industry leader, winning several awards and was admired for his innovation and integrity.
Fowler Brothers continues under the leadership of his son, Walton Fowler.
“He loved to laugh and make others laugh and the mischievous boyhood twinkle in his eyes never left him,” according to the obituary posted on Heritage Funeral Home’s website. “His greatest delight was his family who will forever love and remember him for the wonderful and devoted husband, father and grandfather that he was.”
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Sarah Fowler; a daughter, Sarah Chappell Fowler; sons Richard Fowler III and Walton Fowler; and seven grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be held Monday at noon at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, 316 N. Bragg Ave., Lookout Mountain, Tenn., 37350. A reception and visitation will be from 10:30 am until noon. Burial will follow the celebration at Forest Hills Cemetery.
