NAPLES, Fla. — Founder of City Mattress in western New York, Jerome (Jay) Schiller, died in his home Jan. 5 after a brief illness. He was 81.
Schiller was born April 28, 1938, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Sidney and Goldie Schiller. A graduate of Bennet High School in 1956, he started in retail in 1963 when he bought the name City Mattress and store that had been renovating old mattresses.
He opened a second store the following year and by 1998 had eight stores in operation. Today the retailer has 23 locations listed on its website, in western New York and Florida.
Schiller is survived by his wife of 53 years, four children and nine grandchildren.
