CLAFIN, Kan. — Furniture retailer William J. “Bill” Miller died Jan. 15 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston after an almost three-year battle with cancer. He was 63.
Miller was born March 28, 1959, in Hoisington, Kan., the son of Robert and Elizabeth Miller. He graduated in 1978 from Claflin High School and received his Associates Degree from Barton County Community College and then attended University of Kansas.
On April 17, 1982, he married Tami DeBusk in Claflin, Kan., where he helped run the family business, Miller’s of Clafin. In business for more than 120 years, Miller helped expand the business to Hays, Salina and Great Bend, with Ashley HomeStores, Mattress Solutions and Furniture Clearance Centers.
Miller also was a partner in RJM Oil Company, C&K Oil Co. and Miller Financing; he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council and the fire chief of the Sandhill Rural Fire District.
He was preceded in death by his father, three brothers-in-law and a nephew. Miller is survived by his wife; three children, Colby Miller, Catlin Miller and Candra Miller Pilas; four grandchildren; his mother; nine brothers and sisters; 33 nieces and nephews, 67 great-nieces and nephews; and four great-great nieces and nephews.
